Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s words, "I have a dream," are one of the most famous and inspiring speeches in history. At the time of the speech, Dr. King was a young minister, but he had already been working for years on behalf of African American rights and equality.
He and his wife, Coretta, were attacked and even murdered for their beliefs by people who were convinced that black people deserved to be treated badly. Dr. King was an expert at speaking to crowds of thousands without seeming nervous or self-important.
He was so good at it that he started giving speeches almost every night during his tour in the south to raise money for his Southern Christian Leadership Conference. With this speech, Dr. King wanted to remind everyone that even though there were still many barriers between black people and white people in the United States, there was hope for change.
